I have a question for people used to weighing their yarn during a project, because I'm getting a little confused.

I've cast on "Copilot" (link to Ravelry pattern), a cowl knit-in-the-round made from sock yarn. Between sections of the pattern, you weigh your yarn so you're sure you can finish the project and make a well-balanced item ( Read more... )

So I've got this HUUUUGE pile of stash/leftover yarn and no idea what to do with it. Or well, I've always got lovely projects going on for the slightly thicker yarns, but the thinner ones are just sitting in my Enormous Box of Stash and doing nothing. As some of you might have heard, New England got hit with a mighty big snowstorm last night and today.  I took advantange of the enforced day off to finally finish a pair of socks for my three-year old.

Normally, most scarf knitting bores me as it's a continuous seemingly never-ending line of knits / purls. Even Elizabeth Zimmerman mentions in her book, "Knitting without Tears", that to make a scarf you continue until, "you can't stand it anymore".

I fell in love with the Binary Hat being made for the 2008 hat attack. Making cables that count out numbers in binary is such geeky fun. But I’m more of a glove person than a hat person, so I wanted to carry over the idea to a pair of mitts. Fetching seemed to lend itself perfectly to the idea. I wanted to work with some of Elsebeth Lavold's cables in the "Viking Patterns For Knitting" book. But I also didn't have enough yarn for a sweater or anything like that, so I just sort of improvised a kerchief/headscarf (not a hat!) Then I fastened it with shell buttons.
